Nurturing Tomorrow’s Leaders


The University of Greenwich is recruiting 14 high-quality, independent early career research Fellows to partner existing research groups, who will develop their academic careers with us. Successful candidates will be appointed for a period of three years starting ideally no later than 1 April 2019. Subject to satisfying performance criteria and budgetary constraints, it is anticipated that these Fellows will transition into academic posts at the end of the Fellowship period.


The 14 Fellowships will be distributed over the four Faculties of the University. Each Fellow will be embedded in an established research area, and partnered with an academic lead within a broad research discipline. Faculty of Business 

Institute of Political Economy, Governance, Finance and Accountability 

Prof. Ozlem Onaran (O.Onaran@gre.ac.uk)


Based in the Institute of Political Economy, Governance, Finance and Accountability (PEGFA), a Fellow will be recruited to contribute to one or more of the current research specialisms; (1) political economy, (2) finance, (3) governance and regulation. Potential topics include the interaction of institutions, state, society, corporate governance, inequalities,  how institutions and policies affect economic, social and environmental sustainability, regional, sectoral and corporate patterns of change, productivity, development, the effectiveness of corporate governance patterns and financial and accounting regulatory changes, impact of AI and other technological changes, job creation and destruction, and post-Brexit UK financial services environment and corporate governance regulation vis-a-vis the status of London as a world financial centre. Methodologically, we expect the research fellow to support building rich datasets that allow for firm/industry/regional level analysis.

Networks and Urban Systems Centre

The Networks and Urban Systems Centre invites proposals for a Fellowship focusing on firm- and city-level investigation of international production and trade networks, embracing innovation, productivity, competitiveness, global value chains, spatial location of value creation and capture, and uneven development. Fellows should possess a doctorate in economics, economic sociology, network science or related fields with the ability to engage with large-scale data using Python, R or similar.

Centre for Research in Employment and Work

Dr. Ruth Ballardie (R.T.Ballardie@greenwich.ac.uk)


Based in the Centre for Research in Employment and Work, the Fellowship addresses the theme ‘Work Quality’ embracing work organisation, working time and work-life boundaries in the public sector. This theme includes the implications that temporal changes to traditional rhythms and patterns of labour represent for work, as well as for social and individual wellbeing; the strategies workers adopt to cope with them; and the long-term implications for the social institution of work. Key concerns include: the relationship between work organisation, work intensification, demands for ‘flexibility’, and working time; workers’ sense-making and coping strategies concerning these changes, for example the self-regulation of work through task performance and working time; how these are shaped by work systems, organisations, institutional and regulatory processes and by wider social, economic and political contexts; effects on worker/professional identities, work-life boundaries, personal and financial wellbeing; impacts on work quality and service quality; the role of gender in these dynamics. The research may take a mixed methods approach, but with a strong qualitative element, possibly including ethnographic approaches.

The Fellow will have research experience in the sociology of work, industrial relations or human resource management.

Design, Manufacture and Innovative Products

Based in the Design, Manufacture and Innovative Products Group in the School of Engineering, the Fellow will contribute to the group’s wider interests in new product development, information and knowledge management, manufacturing systems integration, digital manufacturing, design for manufacture and product lifecycle management, focusing on new enabling technologies, methods and processes for the design, manufacturing and servicing of high value complex engineering products and systems. The Group has a wide range of industrial collaborators including BAE Systems, Cummins Power Generation, Ford, Delphi, Edwards and many small to medium enterprises (SMEs) working on projects funded by UK research and higher education funding councils and the European Commission.

Mathematical Modelling for Engineering

Based in the Mathematical Modelling for Engineering Group, the Fellow will be expected to contribute to on-going activities in the area of computational modelling of heterogeneous materials. A computational framework is sought for a wide range of heterogeneous materials, which becomes a numerical engine for analysis of any type of heterogeneous system using a multi-scale modelling system. Heterogeneous system (HS) of materials represent a class of materials where their composition can be differentiated across different length scales, and include composites, granular materials, biomaterials, bulk solids, concrete, particulate systems, etc. Developing a computational framework for such diverse material systems is essential in addressing a number of short-comings of existing approaches for computational modelling of HS; (1) the length-scale dichotomy arising from differences in length scale of phases and microstructure constituents, (2) bridging of length-scales through computational homogenization algorithms to be able to pass information from a lower to higher length-scale satisfactorily, (3) the need to develop robust software for tracking the multiphysics of HS.

Centre for Innovation in Process Engineering and Research

3D printing has gained momentum in pharmaceutical and biomedical industries as a new and revolutionary manufacturing tool. Currently there is increased industrial interest in the development of tailor-made medical devices, flexible multi-drug combinations and personalised dosing. The aim of this Fellowship is to exploit the development of novel 3D printing technologies for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications, ideally in the following areas (1) investigate the printability of pharmaceutical/medical grade polymers and subsequently develop predictive models (e.g. Matlab, neural networks), (2) optimise the manufacturing of multi-drug dosage forms using a range of 3D printed technologies, such as FDM coupled with a filament 3D line, (3) develop novel medical devices such as 3D printed wearable devices, dissolvable microneedles and hybrid stents for industrial applications, and (4) exploit 3D printing for fabrication of novel wound healing patches and ocular lenses for drug delivery purposes.

Algal Biotechnology Research Group

Prof. Pat Harvey (P.J.Harvey@gre.ac.uk)


The Fellow will be based in the Algal Biotechnology Research Group, and will be expected to make a novel and expanded contribution to co-ordinated research effort in algal biotechnology. The group has excellent cultivation facilities and expertise and an outstanding record of quality output. It recently co-ordinated a €10m FP7-funded project, the D-Factory (11 industries) for a demonstration micro-algae biorefinery based on Dunaliella. The group also contributed to an evidence review report on macro- and micro-algae in November 2017 for the Scientific Advisory Mechanism of the European Commission, which was aimed at informing policy on the topic Food from the Oceans, and will be developing food and feed from both macro- and micro-algal biomass in a new Interreg 2Seas project “Valgorize”. A further AC1 post will also be available as a member of the Valgorize team.

Internet of Things and Security Research Group

School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences

Based in the Internet of Things and Security Research Group, the Fellow will complement on-going activities in the area of Human Data Interaction (HDI) in the Internet of Things (IoT). In IoT, where sensors, actuators, cloud computing and embedded artificial intelligence merge cyber space with physical space, protecting IoT data privacy means protecting physical privacy too, and as such requires new paradigms for users to interact with the IoT big data generated by and in physical space. Specifically, there is a need for research that investigates suitable human-centred models of how we interact with the data that we generate in IoT. The challenge from a HDI perspective is that personal data is increasingly generated within IoT infrastructures by passive, mundane interactions as opposed to explicit interactions. The resulting data is increasingly accessible for third party use and frequently outside of the control of the people that produced it.

Applied Sociology Research Group

Based in the Applied Sociology Research Group, the Fellow will promote scholarship focused on grassroots and community activism, which is participatory, creative and arts-based. The research should involve inter-disciplinary collaborations between the social science disciplines of social policy, sociology, health and social work using applied, innovative and participatory action-based research methodologies. Applications are particularly welcome from early career scholars with a research interest on activism with marginalised and vulnerable social groups, for example young people, women, Black, migrant families, and low-income working class communities.

Numerical and Applied Mathematics Research Unit

Prof. Choi-Hong Lai (C.H.Lai@gre.ac.uk)


Based in the Numerical and Applied Mathematics Research Unit, the Fellow will develop mathematical and numerical tools in the area of Health and Computational Biology and its associated subject areas through the use of large amounts of data supported by Uncertainty Quantification and Probabilistic Partial Differential Equations for System Identification and Optimisation. In addition, image processing and machine learning techniques will also be involved from time to time in supporting various bio-medical applications involved in the fellowship. The Fellow will expect to generate long term impact in the medical community, society, and public health services through in silico systems supported by strong mathematical, physiological, and biological theory to assist health workers in making decisions which help to ensure a sustainably healthy society. Tools and methods developed within this fellowship will be destined for generic extension to areas of general engineering, bio-medical, and financial application systems benefiting a range of engineers and scientists.

Institute of Lifecourse Development 

Four Fellowships

As part of significant long-term plan to build internationally leading research and teaching in the Faculty, we are creating a new multi-professional and multidisciplinary Institute for Lifecourse Development. The Institute will work with our extensive network of external partners to focus our interdisciplinary expertise around the health, education and wellbeing of vulnerable and marginalised people in the community, be they children at risk, people with chronic illness, the aged, or people who are victimised or stigmatised. The Institute will be a key anchor resource where professionals, researchers and stakeholders from public, charitable and voluntary organisations can work together to develop effective and lifecourse solutions and tackle the grand challenges society faces though effective research, training and practice. As part of this, we have an exciting opportunity for four outstanding early career researchers to join us. The successful applicants will work with our existing staff to build on the interdisciplinary expertise in the faculty, particularly within the disciplines of Psychology, Health, Social Care and Education.  

You will be working with a range of high quality researchers under the leadership of Dr Claire Monks, Professor Pam Maras and Professor Derek Moore (C.P.Monks@gre.ac.uk; P.F.Maras@gre.ac.uk; D.G.Moore@gre.ac.uk)


One fellow will work in the new Centre for Vulnerable Children, Young People and Families. The researcher will contribute to research from very early childhood, preschool and primary school-age, adolescence, early adulthood and lifecourse. The faculty already has research excellence in pre and post-natal development, autism, behaviour problems, internet addiction, disengagement with education and emotional difficulties. 


A second fellow will join the newly established interdisciplinary Centre for Marginalised, Stigmatised and Victimised Groups, which has established researchers with excellence including in intergroup contact, gender and children and young people’s self-perceptions, economic analyses of inequalities, impact of socioeconomic deprivation, gender and LGBT+ issues, racism and nationalism and community interventions


The remaining two Fellows may be appointed in one of the other four new centres in the Institute 


The Centre For Cognition, Thinking, Learning And Education, brings together our long established research expertise in areas of neuroscience and imaging, decision making processes, hazard and risk perception, literacy and numeracy development and neurodevelopmental disorders.


The Centre For Mental Health, Risks and Solutions includes work in antenatal and perinatal education, mental health in mothers, education transitions, health behaviour education and lifestyle choices, stress and anxiety management, and mental health interventions.


The Centre for Managing Disease, Aging and Chronic Problems, where we already have research expertise in relation to arthritis, diabetes, IBD and Dementia, sports injuries and exercise interventions, nutrition interventions and cost-effectiveness of care and quality of life.


The Centre for Workforce Development brings together our expertise in integrative care pathways across professions, leadership skills, effective communication in education, healthcare and medical teams, effective pedagogy and career Coaching.

Each Fellowship offers:

  • Three years competitive salary (AC2), starting April/May 2019, following the University’s Research Career Pathway.
  • Extensive career development support, including participation in a mentoring scheme associated with the Research and Enterprise Training Institute.
  • The linking of the Fellowship to an established academic post, subject to performance against high-quality performance thresholds and the continued right to work in the UK.
  • Start-up support to facilitate the incorporation of the Fellows research activity.

The Leaders Scheme is designed for early career researchers, and it is expected that candidates would normally have between three and six years post-doctoral experience. Candidates will be assessed on their track record relative to their career stage, personal aspirations and collaborative potential to the existing research excellence within the recruiting unit.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate:

  • An outstanding track record of research, including high-quality publications, research funding and/or prizes and awards.
  • Evidence of a growing reputation, both nationally and internationally.
  • An aptitude to lead and inspire others within the research team and institution more broadly.
  • Potential to act as an ambassador in their research field.
